Bringing history alive

As part of the Travelling exhibition, the showreel features various shows with relevance to exhibited puppetry heritage. The selected works offer an insight into diverse puppetry traditions and the internal workings of puppet theatre. Inspired by the European avant-garde or opera-music-art relationship they are either presenting historical information or are original works, created during the period.

Come up with a story

Just like Don Quixote we will head into the world of adventures and imagination. From the magical box we will choose different objects, invent and interconnect stories about great puppet masters and their theatres, which travelled worldwide. The children will cooperate and learn through play about the past century, during which puppetry has experienced significant changes and a new creativity.

In the spotlight: Milan Klemenčič

Besides being the first professional Slovene puppeteer, Milan Klemenčič was a painter, set designer and photographer. By studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, the Milan- based Brera Academy of Fine Arts and at the Royal Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, he was one of the few painters of the pre-war generation from the region of Primorska who had trained abroad. His artistic work will be showcased by experts from the regional museum Goriški Muzej, who will shed light on his role in local society, his artistic versatility and talk about the restoration process performed on Klemenčič's paintings from the Museum's collection.

Preserving puppets

Once they enter a museum’s collection, puppets pass from the status of theatrical object to heritage artefact. Though they often can’t be handled on stage anymore, their meaning and authenticity must be transmitted to the next generations. The workshop will introduce the role of the conservator-restorer toward the specificity of puppets, dolls and automatons. The presentation and practical exercise will deal with their preservation, including handling and storage, and some solutions for their exhibiting will be developed.

Building audiences in culture

Arts and cultural institutions need audiences. A major challenge lies in how to attract them and build their loyalty. During the seminar you will learn to analyse this problem and receive the necessary tools to achieve the goal – drawing in the public with an authentic story of love and passion. Different international experiences will be analysed from the perspective of the Spanish company Etcétera and practical exercises will be carried out in groups.

Restore-It!

Milan Klemenčič was a miniature marionette master. He cast the faces for his puppets in plaster and painted them with great attention to detail. The unforgettable Faust, Gašperček, Prince Lavrin and other characters are all his creations. We will try our hand at the old master’s work. Are we up to the task?

Exploring the Kingdom of Imagination

The theatre is much more than just a hall and the stage. It’s alive in the backstage as well. We'll show you all those corners of our theatre for visitors usually remain hidden. We will visit various stages, see a puppet workshop, masking room and puppet restoration lab. We will stop at the Martin Krpan, who every hour from the roof tower happily welcomes citizens of Ljubljana and tourists.
